The following is an introduction to magnesium alloys :
Basic Concepts
Magnesium alloy is an alloy based on magnesium with the addition of other elements such as aluminum, zinc, manganese, cerium, thorium, etc. It has the characteristics of low density, high strength and large elastic modulus.
characteristic
Physical properties: low density, about 1.8g/cm³, which is 2/3 of aluminum and 1/4 of iron; low heat capacity, good thermal conductivity, fast heat dissipation; large linear expansion coefficient, reaching 25-26μm/m℃.
Mechanical properties: High specific strength, which can reduce the weight of aluminum or iron parts without reducing the strength of the parts; the specific stiffness is equivalent to that of aluminum alloy and steel; the seismic and noise reduction performance is good, and within the elastic range, the energy absorbed by the impact load is greater than that of aluminum alloy parts.
Chemical properties: It has good resistance to corrosion from organic matter and alkali, but is easily oxidized and corroded in humid air. At room temperature, the magnesium surface reacts with oxygen in the air to form a loose magnesium oxide film, which makes it less corrosion resistant.
Classification
According to the forming method, it can be divided into two categories: deformed magnesium alloy and cast magnesium alloy. Deformed magnesium alloy has higher strength and better plasticity, and is suitable for parts formed by pressure processing; cast magnesium alloy has good casting performance and can manufacture parts with complex shapes.
